02/14/04 - Sightings

Good to see the weatherman was wrong. Was supposed to be cloudy/rainy, but the sun was out. I got a late start to the day out around 1330 I figured a spin around the Roseville yard was in order.

A look to the west and east while crossing over the yard on the Antelope over pass showed trains parked on the mainline at Antelope and one getting ready to head out of the yard. UP 3632-3374 are leading a wb freight from the yard. Amtrak #6 was really late. Around 1330 AMTK 156-136 lead #6 by the Roseville Auction. The service tracks where full and had two jewels in them. RSSX 7983 one of the GP9's from Lathrop and CNW8646 where spotted.

After #6 cleared the Roseville depot the scanner picked up an inbound west bound freight off of Donnor. A run to Cattlemans caught UP5806 (a filthy flag unit)-9355-9210-4393 pn this freight. Sitting on the number one main was the first of the seven parked trains that I counted. This one had some weird power. UP 7529-UPY862; a AC6000CW and a SD38-2R. I decided to head back into the Roseville to where the Valley line and the Donnor line join up. The Rocklin Rocket (UP 598-771) was on the wb leg of the wye from the Valley waiting for the freight to clear so it could back into the yard.

After this it was a drive along the south side of the yard and then down Roseville road to look at the parked trains west of the yard. The yard was packed. Even the Rockpile had freights lined up on the tracks. Nothing really exciting going on in the yard, but did catch the top of a CDTX/AMTK F59PHI on one of the outbound tracks.

The parked trains where strung out for about 7 miles, first one was noted at the Antelope cross overs but could not get the unit numbers. Behind it at Citrus Heights was another with UP 3728-8798-1355 (DRGW Patch)-9322-699. The next one was noted at the Watt Ave overpass. UP 3647-2745 (SP Patch) where the power on this one. At Plane Haven was UP 3247-3488. Under the I-80 overpass was UP 3450-3383 and the last set train was parked across from the RTA shops with UP 3327-3635.

A full yard and 7 parked trains; thats about normal for Roseville. Below is a complete list of observed units (sorry but the format gets lost on here)
